Sailing ships westward ho!

November 15th, 2017 by

We were challenged with packing these little beauties for their journey to Washington State. The masts and yard-arms are very delicate and needed support as the box could flip in any orientation during travel. They arrived ready for their new home!

Cortez moves across Florida!

November 10th, 2017 by

We had an opportunity to pack and ship this stone bust of Cortez on its journey from the west to east cost of Florida. The head was very heavy and needed custom packing. The wrought iron stand was packed alongside of it for its trip, but was much lighter!

Curio cabinet to California!

May 17th, 2016 by

We recently had an opportunity to pick this up from a Sarasota based mom and custom pack it for safe travel to her daughter in California. Though it is light, its relatively delicate so we took extra precaution to prepare it for anything it might encounter along the way.

Dimensional weight and its impact on your shipment

February 19th, 2016 by

“Dimensional weight” is a number generated based on the dimensions of the package being shipped. The carriers use the greater of dimensional weight and actual weight in detemining the cost of a shipment. Due to the environment packages travel in, they need some degree of protection from bumps and dings along the way. In most cases this takes the form of bubble wrap, styrofoam peanuts and cartons to protect items. This of course increases the size of the carton, which increases the dimensional weight and hence usually the cost to ship. The more delicate the item, the more cushioning space needed and carton size increases. This is especially true if there is a desire to cover the against breakage en route as the carriers won’t cover the loss if sufficient cushioning isn’t used.

Some of the most interesting things!

February 12th, 2016 by

We truly run into some unique items that need to be packed and shipped. This delicate bird cage was packed and shipped out of state via LTL truck line due to its size. This presented some interesting challenges in packing and preparation to assure that it arrives safely and ready for its new occupant!

Holiday gift shipping reminders

December 4th, 2015 by

As you are planning your gift shipments for the holidays, please remember delivery times to your destination. As an example, UPS or Fedex ground shipping takes 6 days for delivery to a destination like Seattle. So to arrive there by the 24th, gifts would need to leave by the 16th. Of course the nearer the destination typically the faster the delivery time.

Also, keep in mind that during this time of year, UPS and Fedex suspend their guarantee for date specific delivery… so there is no recourse for late deliveries. On top of that, keep weather between here and there in mind!

Bottom line is don’t delay! The sooner you ship, the more assured you can be of delivery on time.

Have a Merry Christmas!

Preparing to ship your small package

August 21st, 2015 by

The environment that a small package travels in from point A to point B can be a rough one. There is manual handling, conveyor systems, package handling equipment, even the bumpy plane or truck ride! Due to this, your items are experiencing shocks and bumps that put them in danger of damage not only from the outside but from each other within the package. Knowing how to protect your items properly in this somewhat hostile environment is our specialty.

At Pak Mail we will make sure your items are packed to protect them along the way so they arrive safe and sound. We follow industry standard guidelines at minimum and when needed we go above and beyond to assure those very fragile pieces arrive safely.

Shipping heat sensitive items

June 30th, 2015 by

Thinking of sharing some of that fish you just caught with your brother in Denver? In the heat of the summer perishable shipping can be a special challenge, you don’t want it to arrive half baked and smelling like an old pair of shoes! Your best bet is to freeze the fish fillets solid and bring them in just before the carriers pickup (3-4pm). Please bring ice / gel packs or dry ice to pack around the fish. We usually will insulate the box with Styrofoam to maintain the coolest temperature possible for the duration.

The trip may include many hours in vehicles or warehouses with little or no air conditioning. So, beyond the preparation of freezing and packing with a refrigerant, like dry ice, and insulating the package, you will want to use a carrier that will guarantee delivery over night or at most 2nd day.  Typically Fedex Express or UPS would be used for these type shipments.  We will do our best to keep the box size as small as possible to provide proper insulation while being as economical as possible. Please call us ahead of time to verify carrier pickup times!
